[Bookbinder's Ticket] In black ink on white paper, the bookbinder's ticket consists of a border made up of joined circles surrounding black text of various sizes and fonts. The word 'Carswell' begins with a decorative letter 'C'. A decorative element in the shape of a water drop or a flame is found in the lower middle of the bookbinder's ticket. 2. [Bookplate for Alfred C. Harmsworth] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features a crest-wreath with a knight’s right arm extended and bent at the elbow. The arm is armoured with a point at the elbow and circular decorations on the rest of the arm. The hand clutches a sword that has gone through a small lion’s head from the chin through to the crown. The lion has whiskers, but no mane. Below the crest, the bookplate owner’s name is written in black, sentence case, gothic font. 3. [Bookplate for Almeric Hugh Paget] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, sable (black), charged with a cross, argent (silver), between four eagles displayed. The cross is charged with five lions passant guardant. Above the escutcheon is a capless-crown denoting baron status, and above the crown is a peer helmet, positioned three-quarters, with mantling radiation from it and surrounding the escutcheon. Above the helmet is a straight wreath, charged with a heraldic tyger, rampant. At dexter and sinister are two men, each holding a flag charged with a cross patee. Below the escutcheon is a banner, with Latin motto within. Below entire arms is another banner, with bookplate owner's name and title. 4. [Bookplate for Andrew Allan] In black ink on red paper, this bookplate features an ornate border surrounding text in the center. 5. [Bookplate for Art Gallery of Toronto by Alexander Scott Carter] Blank ink on white paper. Border consists of a thin black line, then a thicker black line, then an alternating black and white dashed line, and finally a thin black line. Capitalized black font with the words separated by geometric dots surrounds a black square. The black square is decorated on the inside with floral motifs. There is a circle inside the square with black text and black borders. Inside the circle are some more floral motifs, as well as two shields. The top shield is divided per pale. The left hand side is quartered with alternating designs of 3 horizontal arrows and vertical triangles. On the right hand side, the top third features vertical stripes, while the bottom two thirds are charged with three black stars. The lower shield is divided in a similar way and has the same stars and stripe design on the right hand side. The left hand side has alternating designs of fish, waves, and lions passant. Between the two shields is a horizontal rectangular box with black text inside. At the bottom of the bookplate is another rectangle with a border decorated with a swirling black and white motif. There is also an inner black border, inside of which is more black text. 6. [Bookplate for Beatrice Eleanor Paget by T&H Sc. and A. S.] This pictorial bookplate, created using brown ink on white paper, portrays Wilton House (Wilton, England) built during the 17th century and the seat of the Earl of Pembroke. It is believed that Sir Philip Sidney wrote Arcadia at Wilton House. The picture is framed with vertical columns and garlands. The creator of the bookplate is listed as [T & H / Sc. A.S.]. 7. [Bookplate for Charles Bathurst] This bookplate consists of an escutcheon divided per pale. The dexter side, sable (black), contains two bars, ermine (design representing white powdered fur with black tufts). At the centre of the top bar there is a crescent, or (gold), within a mullet, gules (red). On the top third of the sable background are three cross formy, or. The sinister side is itself divided per pale, ermine and ermines (design representing black fur powdered with argent [silver]). It contains three fleurs-de-lis all counter-changed, two over one, and contains a chevron charged with five lozenges, ermine and ermines all counter-changed. Atop the shield, but not resting on it, is a straight crest wreath and an arm embowed, with fist clenched holding a spiked club. The arm is charged with a crescent, or , within a mullet, gules. 8. [Bookplate for Charles Felix Aylwin] In black ink. Escutcheon parted per fess, barry nebuly of three, argent [white] and gules [red]. Three lions, rampant, sable [black], two over one. Above the escutcheon is mantling, on which sits a curved crest wreath and a paw, erased, sable, within a Mural crown proper. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the French motto. 9. [Bookplate for Clark. William Mortimer] In black ink, a circular belt/garter provides the border. Within is a cat, sejant rampant, upon a straight crest wreath. The belt contains the English motto. 10. [Bookplate for Coburn Haskell by E. Cox & Co] Black ink on cream paper. The coat of arms features a shield of vair represented in six rows of black and silver. The depiction includes mantling. A helmet tops the shield and at the crest is a fruit tree. Below is a scroll with motto. The publisher information is inscribed under the shield. 11. [Bookplate for Dorothy Maclaren Hepton by William Walker Alexander] Brown ink on cream paper. A plain border with a thin brown outline on the outside and thick brown outline on the inside. The image in the center of the bookplate is surrounded by a decorative background. The background has brown dots overlaid with thin white leaves on a stem. The stems curl around the left and right sides of the image. The image in the center is surrounded by a border comprised of three petaled leaves. At the top, bottom, left, and right of the border are two crossed strips covering the leaves. A dark inner border separates the decorative leaves from the center image. The image itself depicts two women sitting in an ancient Grecian scene. There is a building with arches in the left background. Next to the building, right behind the women is a large, shaded column. The foregrounded woman is sitting on a platform. Behind her is a small bowl of flowers. The same flowers decorate her dark hair in a floral crown. She is wearing a flowing white dress with a jewelry band around her right arm, which is holding onto her knees. At her feet is a lyre perched against another ledge. Behind the lyre is a dark, three-legged vessel with smoke pouring from it. There are some bushes behind the vessel and a plain horizon with a dark landscape and a pale sky. To the left of the vessel is a woman either standing or on her knees ; her legs are blocked from view by the sitting woman. The woman is playing a wind instrument, potentially an aulos. Her hair is in a half bun and half down. The ribbons in her hair are also flowing behind her head. Curling ribbons extend from below the image’s bottom border. A thicker ribbon rolls out below the ribbon. The bookplate owner’s name is printed in capitalized, serif font. Each word in the owner’s name is printed on its own line, with each line becoming increasingly indented. Two daisy flowers on stems are printed to the left of the last word in the owner’s name. 12. [Bookplate for Felix Carbray] This bookplate consists of a an ornamental escutcheon, ermine (white powdered fur with black tufts), charged with a lion rampant, gules (red). The crest consists of a dexter helm, topped by a curved wreath and dexter cubit arm holding a sword. From either side of the crest extends elaborate mantling which flows down to the base of the shield where a banner is located, containing the Irish motto: "DIA A'S CEART." Translates to "God's Right" (as in His right to rule). 13. [Bookplate for Geo. Campbell] In black ink. Escutcheon parted per cross. First and fourth quarters, gyrony of eight pieces, argent [white] and sable [black]. Second and third quarters, argent, a ship with three oars, furled sails, and two flags, gules [red]. Supporters, lioncels combatant. Above the escutcheon is a marquess coronet. The crest consists of a straight crest wreath and a boar, couped close. 14. [Bookplate for George E. Longley by Francis Adams Sc.] Black ink on white paper with cropped corners. The crest features an arm grasping a dagger. The blade of the dagger has pierced the head of a bearded man that resembles a lion head. The arm is atop a crest-wreath. The wreath sits on a flower with a round center and 5 petals. To strips extend out of the flower across the front and back of a ribbon, connecting to the top of the shield. The ribbon extends straight out with curling ends. The motto is printed on the ribbon in black, capitalized, serif font. Shield is ermine with a black bend. Bend charged with three cheetah heads. Underneath the shield, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in elaborate gothic block font. The first letter of each part of the name is outlined with a black border, while the remaining letters are printed in black. Swirling lines and dots embellish the text. Below the name, a location is printed in smaller, sentence case, black serif font. Underneath this text is another swirling line with several dots, to the right of which text is printed in capitalized block serif letters with black outlines. In the bottom left of the bookplate, the creator’s name is printed in small, black, sentence case, serif font. 15. [Bookplate for George R. Alexander] This heraldic bookplate consists of an or (gold) escutcheon with a galley at its centre. A galley is an ancient vessel propelled by oars, and is frequently used in the heraldry of naval officers. Also on the escutcheon are three cross crosslets fitchy sable -- one in dexter chief, one in sinister chief, and one in precise middle base. Atop the escutcheon is a half-visored helm in profile. Within the helm, one can see what appears to be the face of a cat. The helm is topped by a crest wreath and a horse's head, proper, couped and gules (red). From the helm flows extensive or and gules mantling. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the latin motto. 16. [Bookplate for Hart House Library by J. E. H. MacDonald] Brown ink on tan paper. Plate divided into three sections. At the top, the University of Toronto shield sits to the left of the text. In the middle is a picture of Hart House as seen from above. At the bottom is the name of the donor. 17. [Bookplate for Hart House] This bookplate's design is divided into three sections. [Bookplate for Harvey Reginald MacMillan] Heraldic bookplate. At the centre of the bookplate is a wreath out of which two arms are raised gripping a sword. Below the wreath is a ribbon with the Latin motto: "Miseris succurrere disco" (I learn how to help the wretched). Surrounding the image is a black frame with small white triangles. 19. [Bookplate for Hugel] Black ink on white paper. The crest features a lion rampant holding a flower with three petals between its paws. The lion stands atop a crown with elaborate, feathery wings extending upwards to the left and right. The crown is round and flat and decorated with three diamonds across the front. The crown sits on the head of a baronet and knight helm. Elaborate, curling mantling extends to the left and right and down the bookplate, becoming blacker towards the ends. The shield is divided per cross. The top left and bottom right sections are sable and charged with a lion rampant. The lion in the top left faces to the right, whereas the lion in the bottom right faces to the left. Like the lion in the crest, these lions hold a flower with three petals in their paws. The top right and bottom left sections of the shield are argent with sable dots. They are each charged with three black diamonds, two over one. The diamonds have black shading on the right-hand sides. Below the shield, a curling ribbon with non-straight edges has the motto printed in black, capitalized, serif font. Below the ribbon, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in elaborate, black, large, sentence case, Gothic font with extensive curling decorations surrounding the text. 20. [Bookplate for Ian Waldie by Alexander Scott Carter] In black ink on white paper, a sailboat at sea with a fish depicted in the waves below. Three seagulls are flying around the boat.
